Rex's Gourd

I wanted to make something gourdish for Rex on Father’s day. Between getting the garden planted and the fact I’m learning a new technique, it’s won’t be finished in time.

HOWEVER,

He knows what it is and that all good things are well worth the wait. Ha ha!

The wolf and eagle are two of Rex’s totem animals. With this in mind, I took two separate scroll saw patterns from the Artistic Scroll Saw Patterns book (Patrick Spielman and Dan Kihl) and merged them into one. Once that was done and transferred to the gourd, I decided to try my hand carving faux basketry. Bonnie Gibson teaches this technique in her book Gourds Southwest Gourd Techniques & Projects. Her website www.arizonagourds.com offers a lot of information and gourd tools. She is an outstanding gourd artisan and continually blows my hair back with her creations.

I finished the faux basketry design around the center design and will continue it up the stem of the gourd. I’ll do some outline carving around the main design and carve out a few areas within it. I love the molding stains on this gourd and right now (unless the gourd says otherwise) plan on giving it a light stain.

The name of this piece is Red Wolf & Blue Eagle. Enjoy!

Have a Wonder-Filled day and enjoy your journey!
